Location

We decidecd to choose to shot our film in a family house, on a house estate. We decided to do this to add more element of suprise to our movie because you wouldnt except it to me stalkered. If we had choosen a empty haunted mantion it would be expect. We thought this would make our film more realistic.

shotlist

This is a list of shots we should included in our movie the tickets are the times we included them.

scripting for movie 'the creep'

We formed a script for our movie so our selected actors knew what they had to say and do.

booking sheet for equipment

We had to book the camara and tripod and imac computers, we signed a sheet to make sure we could use them. This is a example of one of the camara and tripod sheets and the white sheet is the computer.

My booking is coloured in brown.

preliminary task and 180 degree rule

For our preliminary task we had to include some major points that we would put in our film opening- close-up, 180 degree rule, dialoge and zoom. This will help us to when we go to film our 2min opening due to knowing the techniques and filming.

Heres the 180 degree rule we used in our preliminary task, we made sure we would use continuty editing with lauren coming throught the door to sit down and make sure it fits in with enviroment and camra view.

logo

We designed the production company logo. We decided to come up with the name 'black pictures' we did this because it related to our genre and made it feel kinda creepy.

When putting this at the beggining of our movie we added a square effect to it to make it more intresting.

Layout:The basic layout of our logo is quite plain as we didn't want it to be too complex as you wouldn't be able to define the name if it was too busy, as we thought the name was the most important part.Colours:We chose black and white as it fits in well with our genre and isn't too bright/busy which would confuse the viewer on what they are watching. Also the basic colour scheme makes the image and the text stand out as they are very bold and situated in the centre.Text:The text we used was of a copyright free website, it is quite a basic font but still has some characterism to it, i edited the initial colours as originaly it just had a black outline but we decided that making it all black would influence the genre.
Images: I merged two images together for our logo image, a film real and a bird, i took the top part of the bird and the bottom part of the film real and merged them into one image. This works well in my opinion as the bird shows a scary feel and the film real shows that it is a film company and compliments the logo.

target audience decision

we decided to go to our target audience and find out which opening they prefered and thought was a more appealing opening. We got a punch of 16+ students to watch our two videos and comment on which one they thought was best. We then asked them to fill out a questionnaire we formed to tell us there feelings and why they prefer each movie. We also asked them if they felt the opening worked and attracted them in.

The results from our questionnaire:
Question 1)
'The Dolls Revenge' -3
'The Creep' -17
Question 2)
'The Dolls Revenge' -0
'The Creep' -20
Question 3)
'The Dolls Revenge' -6
'The Creep' -14
Question 4)
'The Dolls Revenge' -3
'The Creep' -17
Question 5)
'The Dolls Revenge'-2
'The Creep'-1
'I liked both of them'-17
From these results we have found out that 'The Creep', is the most popular film we have made and therefore is the one we are going to use as our final film.

Evaluation Final

  1. In what way does your media product use, develop or challeng forms and conventions of real media products?
This clip shows how our opening film used real media product conventions by having different camara shots, mise-en-scene, sound track and lighting.

In 'The Creep' we used close-up because we found out it was a convention found in real products they used close-ups to increase the horror situation and emotion.

Develops. In my short film I feel I have developed a good film with is like real media products. In my two miniute opening I introduced all the charaters early on and I feel I told the story and made it simple for the audience to understand what was going on.
Challanges.my media product challanges conventions of real media products with lack of dialog, due to the baby sitter been left alone. Through primary research I found the audience think films are more tense and scary when there isnt any dialoge.

2. How does your media product represent particualr social groups?

We asked a selection of social groups if are media product represented there social group.
First we decided to ask a male teenager on his opitions on whether or not he thinks it represents male social group. We then decided to ask a female member of the public to watch our media video and see whether they feel it fits with there social group and if it worked well.

This video shows different social groups opitions of our movie.
VIDEO CLIP.

I also emailed my questionnaire to a various people (different sex, age) with my movie to find out there views on my film.

This is one of my responses from the movie. I have found out that they feel it does represent female social group.

We found out that from watching the movie they felt it represented both girls and boys and it was aimed at teenagers over 16. 2/3 of them said they felt it represented there social group and the mise-en-scence was suited to there social group with casual teenage clothes and into fashion.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

We researched wether people brougt DVD's or watched them on the internet.

7/9 people said they would prefer to buy our DVD.

3/9 people pefer to watch our film on the internet.

This shows more people would prefer to buy our film 'The Creep' on DVD rather than watch it off the internet.
Our film is developed with High quality and expencive production- from this 20th Century Fox production would be one of the producing companys we would go for in our media product.
Twentith Centry Fox is a recognized global industry leader and is the worldwide marketing, sales and distribution company for all Fox film and television programming on DVD, Blu-ray Disc.
This can be aimed for a big targeted population rather than a small independent film indusry.
Our film is developed with a high recognized production becausse horror is a very popular genre of film and would be a popular option.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

This picture is taken from IMDB website with shows the attendnce figure of recent horror films. This is a newly released horror which shows there where 418 screens for shutter Island showing horrors are a popular genre of film to see. Which means horror films are very popular and this is advantage for my horror film, also producing a large weekend total of money from viewings.

This board shows the different types if audience watch our media product-

  • 15 years +

  • male

  • female

  • students

  • adults

This shows our film is presented to a wide target audience.

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

Address. We interviewed and filmed a female target audience to watch and comment on there thoughts. From this clip you can see that emma is very focused on the film and engaged in what is happening. You can also see shes scared by her having a nervous laugh and scream half way through.
Her comments of the film were positive and she said she liked it.

Attract. From target research we found out what the target audience wanted in a horror film and what would attract them to wacth it, we included as much research as we could to form our movie.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Constructing my media product we had to form them on the new Imacs, I learnt how to transfer all my filming onto the imacs, with using a camara to film instead of a video camara we had huge trouble trying to work out how to upload it onto the computers. I learnt how to transfer programmes to the Imac techology and switch imac programmes into quicktime.
Constructing my media product I have learnt how to do screen transitions and how they can be used to link our film together. I learnt how to make our film run smooher, rather than jumping from one scence to another. A example of this in our film is by making a circle affect and spirling out onto the door bell.

I have also learnt how to add voice overs onto our movie with using the computers to add more effect to our film. We did this to increase the noise from the banging on the roof in our film by banging on the table.

This video shows what we learnt with the camaras.

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I have learnt different techniques while producing my 2min opening, through the preliminary I learnt how to do the 180 degree rule.

With the preliminary been very good its hard to keep the film to a high professional standard. I feel I have learnt and improved on added CGI, editting onto our two min opening. I feel when editting my final film I had gained more skills and the knowledge to add to my video.

Time line of events- shooting schedule

We developed a log book of events, to plan out all are organisation. Here is a copy of the calander with our up to date events.

Generic Features.

As a group we looked through the analysis of the opening 2 mins of the six different films we watched. We many significant things that happen in many thrillers.

- Angles
There are many close ups in horrors to draw close emotion and make it seem bigger and scary than it is. In our film we are going to include many close ups to add dramatic effect.

- Camara Work
Through the thriller movies we have watched they enfasize the main horror point massivly. For example if there was a stalker they would keep the camra on the stalker or have many close ups. In our film we are going to have dramatic close ups on the scary faces and doll.

- Mise-on-scene
The mise-on-scene in many films is in a dark area, many of the charaters in the films are lonely and kept from the outside.

-Music
The music through the thrillers has always been high pitch strings, with instrumental. We are going to included high pitch strings throught are opening.

-Continuty
The thriller films always flow and dont skip from one major scence to another. This is so the audience can understand the film fully.

Story board research.

We decided to ask our target audience which film they would prefer and think would be a better film. We decided to do this instead of picking a film ourself so we know are audience would be intrested in the opening.

Here is are questionnaire we asked pupils-

From this we found out that our target audience prefer the creep idea compaired to obsession. This is the reason for us developing our 2mins opening.

story board- obsession

The second story idea we had was to develop a film about a boy and girl who were together and then the girl breaks up with the boy and he becomes obsessed over her and cant leave her alone.

genre research

When we first started researching we decided to ask 20 people which genre they most prefer in films to see which genre we should use for our film opening.
We found that the most people preffered thriller/horror this is the reason for us basing our movie on a horrbor.

story boards-the creep

The Creep- this was one of our new ideas for a movie. This was going to be a baby sitter who gets stalked and haunted around the house and the audience can see the figure doing it but she cant.

we developed two story boards. For our second film we developed two new ideas and asked 10 people which they think would be better and why? This helped us develop a new film with old features taken from our film research and then audience research.

First Film-

After filming our first attempt, we came to the conclusion that it was not a succesful task. We decided to film another opening due to many factors. In our first film, we included all the angles and included diaglog through the film. The film was based on a doll which came to life but only the girl knew it did, the doll stole thinks from the mum and stole knife from the kitchen which attempted to kill the girl in the end. The film is a 2 min opening and we produced it and it come to 4 mins, so cuting out 2mins is alot and made the plot discountious and not make any sense to the audience. Due to filming another opening it was down to many factors-

  • We choose to do a horror as our genre, in the film opening we have already produced the audience cant tell it was a horror due to only been the first 2mins.

  • The acting throught the film didnt come together and wasnt contious, another factor was extra talking in the background.

  • The lighting in our opening didnt work, with using a industrial light in the night seen produced to much light and made the scene confusing and not sucessful. Also you could here the sound waves which made it hard to hear the dialogue.

  • The story line didnt flow which was a huge factor, watching the beggining 2 mins you didnt get a good understanding of what was happening. This was factors off bad acting and trying to get the doll to move. And the film was made in 4 mins so we needed to cut down to 2 mins which meant cutting down dialgue which made the story confusing and difficult to understand.

In our next film we look at these factors to make sure we can improve and make it a better film.

Even thought the first film wasnt very good we decided to edit it and complete to have two opening to compare and let the target audience decided on which one they would rather watch.

Key Features; the key features in our first opening film-

  1. Creepy sound track- bullet sho soundtrack, suspense effects.

  2. Doll that come to life.

  3. Lots of close up which brings more emotion.

This is our first 2 min opening we filmed and didnt think it would work.

questionnaire results

To make a effective opening, we asked the target audience what they would find attractive in the begining 2 mins of a horror film. We decided to give our questionnaires about our opening film to our target audience (15) We gave our questonnaires out at the local school and shopping centre to get a wider population to genralise the results. We asked a variation of questions in the questionnaire instead of just closed questions so we can analyse the data in depth and find out real what the target audience want. We asked a variety of questions - open/close questions, ranking scale and rate the setting out of 10. We stratigicaly choose our questions in order to help us when it comes to making our openening to a film; we only asked questions that would be help to us so no time of ours, or theirs, was wasted, and also made sure none of the questions were insulting our hurtfull to the public.

Results- We found that
  • everybody thinks music is needed and collects more suspense throught the film.
  • dolls are scary when used in horror ( which with our first film we used a killer dolls)
  • murders make a film more scary ( with our second film we have a killer in the house after the baby sitter and the doll in the first one is going to kill someone)
  • dark areas are more scary
  • it doesnt make a difference wether the famous actor was in the first 2mins of the horror
